Jenna Bastian
Comic Artist & Illustrator
About
Welcome to my portfolio! I am a freelance human artist, based near Austin, TX, working on designs, comics, and illustrations. I am also the creator of manga, World of Yarn, and bunny themed store, Bun Bun Studio.
CONTACT
I am currently closed to commissions but if you'd like me to work with you on a project, feel free to contact me at [email protected].
Comics
Here are some of the comic projects I am or had been working on. Each story has their unique style based on their writer’s vision, their audience, and the reading format. They were done digitally in Clip Studio Paint, traditionally with ink and copic markers, or on large whiteboards and chalkboards.
World of Yarn
World of Yarn is a self-published fantasy and action-adventure manga, written and illustrated by me. The first volume is finished and was printed with the help of Kickstarter and Patreon patrons. I am currently working on Volume 2.
Mini Comic Series
Short comics of favorite memories or of a loved one, my late dog Shiloh, or of my time as a museum gallery attendant. They are created digitally in Clip Studio Paint, or traditionally with ink and copic markers.
Not As It Seems
“Not As it Seems” is a webcomic written by Poppy Laraia, and illustrated by Jenna Bastian. The first season is to be published on Webtoon during the spring of 2022. The webcomic is colored, and formatted to be read vertically on a phone or tablet.
Tengu Kamen
“Tengu Kamen” is a 24-page comic written by Robert Moreau. I had many roles in this project. For the comic itself, I illustrated the cover, designed the logo, and sketched, ink, screentoned, and lettered the comic pages. Afterwards, I created art for social media and stickers, crowdfunded, published, shipped to customers, and delivered to local Texas stores.
Cyber Security Awareness
I was an artist during the summer of 2015, and again during a weekend in March 2016, for the IT Compliance Group and part of a "Graffiti Art Campaign." I created comic art on big whiteboards or chalkboards and focused on cyber security awareness.
Art
Bun Bun Studio. I volunteer weekly at a local rabbit shelter so I'm aiming to illustrate all the breeds and colors.
Digital illustrations for commissions, fanart, or my original art. They are all done in Clip Studio Paint and edited in Adobe Photoshop.
Design
Below are some graphic design projects- layout and design of game modules, board games, magazine pages, and book covers.
New Comet Games
I was a freelance artist for New Comet Games LLC from 2016 to 2019. Here are some graphic design work I did for the interior of their game modules (some also with TSR games). I mainly worked in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, and artwork and text were created by others on the team. The module was then set up for digital or print publications. My projects were Operation Arctic Blast, Devil's Swamp, and Operation Deep Freeze & Thunderclap. New Comet Games' Devils Swamp was my first RPG module to design, at 188 pages. It was done during the summer of 2018.
“Monster Trap” is a children’s board game made by New Comet Games LLC. There are 8 characters and 4 levels of difficulty. In the game, players must work together to protect Farmer Brown’s sheep by gathering resources to build traps along the Monster’s path. I created the artwork and graphic design of the board game, as well as New Comet Games’ business logo. I used Adobe Illustrator to create SVG files for the printing company, Adobe Indesign to make the rulebook, Photoshop to design the board game box, and Clip Studio Paint to illustrate the board game.
M2 Magazine
I interned at M2 Magazine in Auckland, New Zealand in summer 2014 (specifically on the August 2014 issue). There, I worked with writers and other graphic designers, and learned how to use Adobe InDesign.
Book Covers
These are book covers for L.M. Duncan's series. The first prompt “Fish Your Wish” was “a goose dressed in a plaid waistcoat, cravat, white long-sleeved starched shirt, Irish flatcap, red eyes with elliptical pupils, and a malevolent sneer on its face”.
3D
These were works done while studying 3D modeling and storyboarding at University of Texas at Dallas. Softwares I used were Autodesk Maya, Adobe Suite, and Rhino 3D.
3D Modeling & Texturing
I was part of an Animation Studio team at UT-Dallas that worked on an animated short throughout the school year. My roles included 3D modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, and set dressing an environment for "Squatch" and pre-production for "Procrastination 101". Below are three sections: the first one includes the 3D models I created and was textured by other classmates, second section shows my set dressing, and third section has artwork that other classmates 3D modeled and I textured.
My final project was modeling the dragon based on Ciruelo Cabral’s Magic the Gathering artwork of the White Dragon. The dragon was modeled, UV unwrapped, and textured by me using Autodesk Maya and Adobe Photoshop.
Digital Fabrications
I took a Digital Fabrications class with Andrew Scott and learned how to use software Rhino 3D to create and prepare models for lasercutting or 3D printing. Below is the process of how we worked on our projects, followed by some work I’ve done. More about the specifics of each project can be found at the class blog.
3D modeled in Autodesk Maya, before importing into Rhino 3D.
Used tools within Rhino 3D to set it up for lasercutting or 3D printing.
Rendered in Keyshot to get a preview and see how it would look in a material.
Send the file to the shop to lasercut or 3D print, and build our project
Motion
“Jeans” was commissioned by my dad who worked on a play in his 20s with his friends in Sri Lanka. They wrote and created original music for it, and created this cover. 40 years later I was given the task to animate it. I separated the individual parts in Photoshop and animated each piece in After Effects.
These are illustrated animated gifs of my rabbit Lucita in various poses.
